Runkerry Beach

Beach break

The spot

Runkerry, also known as Bushfoot Strand, is a 500m sandy beach. Accessed via the town of Portballintrae, you'll need to cross over the Three Quarter bridge to access it. It's about half a mile walk through the dunes from the car park.

It's a popular spot for experienced surfers, as it tends to get quite heavy here. Apparently, it got crowned one of the highest energy beaches on this stretch of the coast, although not sure if that's a fully contested metric. From what I've seen, it holds up, and almost acts like a western Ireland beach, where the waves come in quite large and fast.

Also affected by the shifting sand banks, so there isn't a particular tide or lineup location here. Tends to be a per session type lineup, but probably come on a rising tide.

Not much at the location, apart from the public bathrooms and the small convenience store at the car park. Anything else you'll need to venture back into town for.
