The spot
Hough Bay sits on the north-west corner of Tiree, tucked behind Ben Hough, the island's second-highest hill. It's a pretty remote spot with no road access to the beach itself. To get there, you have to walk a dirt track, following the base of the hill for a good while from the road. The surf here is inconsistent, and is described as having fringing offshore reefs that stop the waves forming properly much of the time. When it does break, it's best around low tide. Hough Bay is worth knowing about as an option, but Balevullin or The Maze are where most people end up. On the plus side, if you do make it out, you'll likely have it to yourself.
